Understanding the Hidden Effects of Prenatal Stress

Hormonal Changes
During pregnancy, the body’s natural alert system may activate, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While these hormones are essential in the short term, chronic exposure can be harmful.

Immune System Impact
Prolonged stress can affect the immune system, potentially increasing the risk of infections or other health issues for the expectant mother.

Development For Baby
A baby’s developing nervous system responds to the hormonal cues from the mother. When these signals fluctuate, they can influence early brain and nervous system development.
Hi Mamas,
Your journey into motherhood begins long before birth — from the first hopes of growing your family, through pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum season. It’s a sacred unfolding, and you were never meant to walk it alone.
At Wild Roots, we specialize in prenatal and perinatal nervous system care, and we believe there’s no single “perfect” pregnancy or birth story. Real preparation isn’t about control — it’s about being informed, supported, and empowered to navigate each step with confidence and calm.
Many expecting parents don’t realize just how many supportive options and choices are available when it comes to pregnancy, birth, and early postpartum care. Our Birth & Beyond Workshop was created to change that.
You’re warmly invited to join us for this special in-office workshop where Dr. Jake will walk you through practical, holistic ways to prepare your body and nervous system for pregnancy and birth, and how to build a strong foundation for both mom and baby from the very beginning.
You’ll also hear from birth doula Laura Holman, who will share guidance on birth planning, support strategies, and how to create a care team that aligns with your values and goals.
We’ll leave plenty of time for your questions too — whether they’re about sleep, stress, digestion, comfort, birth preferences, or what to expect in the weeks after delivery. Our whole Wild Roots team is here to support you.
We’re honored to be part of your story and can’t wait to meet you and the little one you’re growing.
With care,
Team Wild Roots
Meet Some Wild Roots Moms! ❤️
During her second pregnancy, this mama chose to receive consistent chiropractic care throughout the entire prenatal and postpartum season at Wild Roots. With a larger baby and increased physical demands compared to her first pregnancy, she wanted more support for her body and nervous system from the start.
She shared that the difference in care was noticeable. Each visit was attentive, gentle, and personalized, and she felt truly heard and supported every step of the way. Dr. Jake’s thorough approach and depth of knowledge helped her feel confident and at ease throughout her pregnancy.
Because of the consistent preconception and prenatal care she received, her postpartum recovery has felt smoother, more comfortable, and more supported than after her first birth. She reports feeling more relaxed, less tense, and better able to move and care for her growing family — and is grateful she prioritized her care throughout pregnancy, not just after delivery.

There’s not a better chiropractor than Dr Jake and his team! His holistic approach not only addresses the root cause issue but also the nervous system for full body healing. He healed my sciatica before getting pregnant, supported me with prenatal care, and now postpartum and adjustments for our newborn. Cannot recommend his practice enough!

How can nervous system–focused chiropractic care support preconception and fertility?
Nervous system–focused chiropractic care helps improve communication between the brain and body by reducing interference in the spine and nervous system. When the body is in a more regulated, adaptable state, it can better support hormone balance, cycle regulation, stress resilience, and overall function — all important factors when preparing for pregnancy. Many couples choose care during preconception to help create the healthiest possible foundation before conceiving.
Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy — and how does it help?
Yes — when performed by a chiropractor trained in prenatal care, adjustments during pregnancy are gentle, specific, and adapted to each stage of pregnancy. Nervous system–focused care supports better adaptability to the physical and hormonal changes of pregnancy, helps balance pelvic and spinal function, and promotes more efficient brain-body communication. Moms often report improved comfort, better sleep, and greater overall regulation — which benefits both mom and baby.
Why does nervous system care matter for birth and postpartum recovery?
Even the smoothest birth is a major neurological and physical event for both mother and baby. A well-regulated nervous system helps the body coordinate more efficiently during labor and delivery and supports smoother recovery afterward. Postpartum chiropractic care focuses on restoring nervous system balance, supporting healing, improving mobility, and helping moms better adapt to sleep changes, feeding demands, and stress. Many families also choose to have their newborn checked to support early nervous system function and development.
